Garrett A. Morgan

Do you know who Garrett A Morgan is ? He was a African American inventor and businessman as well as an influential political leader. By the age of 18, with only a sixth grade level education, he had already started his own sewing equipment repair business, established a newspaper called the Cleveland Call, and invented the first chemical hair straightener. By 1910 he launched the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company where he sold his complete line of hair-care products. His most notable invention was the gas mask in 1912 that helped saved the lives of a group of workers that got stuck in a tunnel after the Lake Erie Explosion. He also discovered the traffic signal in 1923 after witnessing an accident on a roadway. His traffic signal was designed to stand on a street corner and notify vehicles and pedestrians when they should stop or go. In a spanned of 40 years, Garrett A Morgan worked to create new products that enhance safety in modern day living that we still use today.
