Josephine Baker

Do you know who Josephine Baker is ? She was an African American French entertainer,civil rights activist, and French Resistance agent. She spent her youth in poverty before finding her success on Broadway. During the 1920s she moved to France in the midst of the jazz craze and became Europe highest paid performers and became the world’s first “sex” symbol. She is best known for her infamous banana skirt. During World War II Baker worked with the Red Cross, gathered intelligence for the French Resistance, and entertained troops in Africa and the Middle East. After the war she toured the United States. She wanted to confront American racism directly and refused to perform for segregated audiences. She became largely successful and the NAACP recognized her efforts by declaring May 20th Josephine Baker Day. Shortly after she began adopting 12 children of all different ethnicities called her "Rainbow Tribe" . In 1963, Baker flew to Washington D.C. to March with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Josephine Baker creative and powerful performances epitomized the Jazz age.
