Diahann Carroll

Do you know who Diahann Carroll is ? She is a African American actress, singer, and model. Her first role was in 1954 in the film Carmen Jones with Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte. She made history when she became the first African American woman to receive a Tony Award for best actress for the role of Barbara Woodruff in the musical No Strings. She is best known for her starring role as Julia in the 1968 television series Julia, where she played a nurse. Julia became the first television series to star a black woman who was not a domestic worker. She won a Golden Globe for the role and was nominated for an Emmy a year later. In 1997 Carroll was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent nine weeks of radiation therapy and has been cleared ever since. She is now a Breast Cancer survivor and activist. She is also a founding member of the Celebrity Action Council in Los Angeles , working with women in rehabilitation from problems with drugs, alcohol, or prostitution. In 2011, Carroll was inducted in the Television Academy Hall of Fame. Diahann Carroll helped paved the way for the actresses we have today and for the ones soon to come.
